SOUND, PARTS OF THE EAR AND NOISE POLLUTION

An English CLIL unit about "Sound" taught in Natural Science of 2nd level of E.S.O.
Global learning outcomes are to understand how sound travels through air and to identify the right place of parts of the ear in order to protect our sense of hearing as well as to recognize signs warning us of danger. Also, students must be aware of noise pollution, being able to make suggestions to reduce it and seeing noise pollution as a real problem in our daily lives.

The unit will be taught during five lessons of fifty minutes each one, containing six tasks and the final assessment test, in which languages skills such as reading, listening and speaking are worked.

Task 1 introduces the idea of sound to students, with the audio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG5M_CzR1RI. Task 2 consists of an experience to the whole class to prove that a medium is essential for the sound to travel through. Activity 3 lets students recognize mistakes in a listening exercise after reading a text. With activity 4 students work in pairs to learn new vocabulary linked to the parts of the ear. Task 5 consists of some questions that students have to answer by teams after reading a text. Tasks 6 and 7 let students interact with a partner to discuss some questions about sound and noise pollution, giving reasons for them and suggesting control measures. With activity 8 students see the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4TVRg2SoeM and carry out a role play based on it, showing cases of people suffering noise pollution.

Evaluation will include constantly work habits, attitude, notebook presentation, attendance, active participation and a written test with questions about what sound is, how sound travels through air and about noise pollution, similar to those they have worked before.
